The performance of Canberra's hospitals is tumbling

Category: Capital Radio News

The performance of Canberra's emergency departments is now amongst the worst in the country, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's latest stats.

The Institute has found the ACT's median emergency department wait time is 50 minutes -- almost double that of any other state or territory.

While interstate wait-times have remained stable, those at local hospitals have risen by nearly 70 per cent in the last three years.

ACT Health Minister, Rachel Stephen-Smith is blaming the poor results on increasing demand.

She says robust strategies are in place to correct the downward trend, highlighting the government's plan to invest $1 billion in health infrastructure over the next five years.
