Homes in Canberra's east and Queanbeyan saved from bushfires

Category: Capital Radio News

The Beard fire between Canberra airport and Queanbeyan has been contained and is expected to be extinguished over the weekend.

Early indications suggest homes have been saved but five outbuildings have been damged or destroyed.

25 crews will continue to monitor then blaze today, with the fire danger still high despite easing conditions.

Thick smoke coming from a Beard recycling centre is still considered to be dangerous and local residents are advised to stay indoors.

Meanwhile Canberra Airport has re-opened after being forced to cancel flights yesterday afternoon, but is advising passengers to check with their airlines for information regarding flights.
