Man attempts to evade police, possessing firearm

A 38-year-old man has been charged after attempting to evade police and possessing a firearm.

Just after 12.30 last night, Police observed a silver Mitsubishi SUV at Oakes Estate road do a U-turn before rapidly accelerating towards Canberra Avenue at Beard.

Police activated their lights and sirens but the man continued driving at speeds of up to 180km/hr in an 80 zone.

A short time later the vehicle drove over a roundabout at Isa Street at Fyshwick, separating both front tyres from the rims.

The vehicle came to an abrupt stop and the driver attempted to run away.

Officers apprehended him.

The 38-year-old now faces charges including failing to stop for police, dangerous driving possessing a prohibited firearm and possess ammunition.

He'll face the ACT Magistrates Court.
