Ban on some single-use plastics set for next year

Category: Capital Radio News

A ban on single-use plastics in the ACT is back on the agenda after it was put on hold due to COVID-19.

The ACT government plans to phase out single-use plastic cutlery, polystyrene containers and "clamshell" takeaway boxes from July next year, with plastic vegetable bags to go the year after.

Plastic straws would also be banned in 2022, however they would still be available to people with a disability.

Under the draft laws, people could face fines of up to $8000 for selling or distributing so-called prohibited plastic products.
